DIY Fashion: Intermediate, Frumpy to Babydoll

Matronly start
Positive Attitude dress, size 11/12:  $6.59/retail similar found $25-$50
We found this dress at Savers, and snagged it during one of their 30% off sales,  and just knew it could be, with a few snips and tweaks, an adorable summer dress!

Sleeves:  Banished!

The first step, obviously, was to delete the sleeves.  I cut them off, leaving a small amount, enough to turn under for a hem, since the bodice is smocked and a bit heavy to easily turn under for a smooth hem.

Hemming new armholes

Then we turned this matronly scoop neck into a sassy V neck with one cut down the middle (after removing the faux buttons), and turning it under to form a V.

Removing buttons that don't even work....

Cut to make a V-neck

Folding back the neck line for hemming

This was a handy bit: the dress had ties, meant to be tied in the back. Problem was, one side was unattached. They were both hanging forlorn and useless on the right side of the dress.
Broken ties....
Ready to be useful again!

I detached the ties from the dress, and used one at each side of the V neck, between the new neckline and the new armhole hem, to  give us a sweetheart neckline effect.

Last thing to do on this refashion is the hem. We cut about a foot of length off and finished off a new hem and she’s ready to wear!

Cutting about 1 foot off the length....

.....for a much less matronly look!

Sewing the new hem (I was taught to do this ALWAYS by hand. But Katie was growing impatient.

With a wide belt, or a self sash made from the cut off hem, Katie has an adorable new summer dress!
Pay no attention to those dogs.....

...Just check out that new dress!

Now lets all remind her how she doesn't really care for floral prints.
