Coloring Katie's Closet: Summer Dresses

On more than one occasion, I've gotten yelled at by Tess for having the gray syndrome. What is that, you ask? Specifically, this:

I know you know exactly what I mean: too much gray, black, brown, and whatever other muddy, somewhat insignificant colors you have shoved in your closet because colors are a fearful thing. Understandably, if you work in an office environment, you need some neutral palettes. However, this does not exclude you from joining the world of the rainbow on weekends and days off. For those of you who just wear any of the colors seen above on a daily basis, well, you have no excuse and I'm talking to you.

Therefore, via Tess, I'm now going to pick on all of your for severely lacking color in your lives. Story time: For the longest time, I struggled with my weight. There was only really one time in my life, when I started college, where I was actually comfortable with how I looked. Throughout middle school I wore mostly black, in high school I wore sweatshirts and neutral colors, and even in college, I wore what I'd known for years to be suitable. Now that I'm older and actually taking into consideration not only how I look, but how I feel when I wear certain clothes, I'm realizing that I crave color.

Before I continue, color does not have to be a scary thing. It took many tried and failed attempts at matching different styles and colors to figure out what looks right on my hourglass-shaped self: you're not alone in this process, and trial and error is exactly what makes it so much fun. Do I still get bummed out when I try on an outfit thinking it'll work, then realizing it looks like a unicorn puked on me? Sure. When that happens, I laugh it off and move on to something a little more tame. Occasionally though, you'll find something really spectacular--you'll be thrifting or going through your wardrobe and find that one incredible piece, and everything else will just fit in around it. And that's what makes what we do so much fun. So now, I'm inviting you to take the "Coloring Katilee's Closet" challenge with me. So what have I done? Below I have three of my favorite thrifted outfits from the beginning of the season so far, and they also happen to be what I'm remodeling my wardrobe around through summer:

The blue and indigo dress, not the black one--yet!
Delia's, thrifted for $6.99

This is the problem solver to my neutrals void: off-white and brown
Originally from Nordstrom for $24.97, thrifted for $4.89!

You can't really tell, but this dress is actually a light peach (not hot pink!) with a
cream colored ruffle detail
Thrifted for $9.99
Those are my three base jumping color schemes: indigos/deep blues substituted for black, off-white and browns substituted for grays, and peachy/pink tones to brighten up my fashion choices. Details are the second thing I looked for, since by now you know it's not enough just to wear a pretty color dress!

I love the bottom of this skirt. I didn't
realize how pretty the watercolor
pattern was until I actually had
it on. Reminds me of a Monet
painting!

Lace needs no explanation, it's gorgeous during any season.

I love this somewhat rebellious take on lace in the front detail of this dress. Normally, ruffles look terrible on me, but it's all about placement and size!

Last but not least, if you do happen to find that one dress/outfit that you simply can't leave without adding to your cart, add to it! I haven't started my accessorizing journey yet (that's Tess's area of expertise), but I do adore thick belts, especially for my body shape. They truly do wonders, and add fabulous detail to plain jane dresses. You probably wouldn't have guess, but that's what I did with the white lace dress pictured above. Below is my (growing) belt collection--I think I now have a neutral belt for every color scheme!

None of these were over $3.99; some were even below $2. Surprise!

With a little thriftista-ing, you too can add color and your own style to your wardrobe! So take advantage of everything thrifting has to offer, and go color!
